Peppermint Lip Balm with Essential Oils

Hello friends! Today I am going to share with you one of my favorite ways of using Essential Oils to make homemade beauty products; Peppermint Lip Balm.  I love a certain peppermint lip balm that I have used for years.  I like the way it smells and feels.  But, I don't love the price tag.  My children have loved this kid of lip balm too.  But it was costing me a small fortune with all of them using it (and losing it!)  So, I decided to try my hand at making my own.  My family agrees that it was a complete success.  They now prefer my lip balm over the expensive store-bought stuff.  Win! Win!

   INGREDIENTS:
  • 20 grams Beeswax (About 3 Tablespoons)
  • 20 grams Cocoa Butter or Coconut Oil (About 2 Tablespoons)
  • 45 grams Sunflower Oil (About 1/4 cup)
  • 8 drops Vitamin E Oil (approx) - can also use 4 vitamin E oil tablets.
  • Pea-size drop of Lanolin (more and it will taste bad)
  • 6 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
  • 30 drops Peppermint Essential Oil

  OTHER SUPPLIES:
  • Scale (optional)
  • Double Boiler
  • Empty Lip Balm Tubes (you will need approximately 20 for this recipe)
  • Dropper or Squeeze Bottle

 DIRECTIONS:
  • Measure out all ingredients with scale or measuring cups/spoons except essential oils.

  • Add ingredients to double boiler.  I just use a metal measuring cup in a pan of boiling water.

  • Melt all ingredients.  The beeswax seems to take longest to melt.
  • Once it is all melted remove from double boiler and add essential oils.  Carefully dip finger and test on your lips to see if it needs more oils.  If it doesn't spread easily add a bit more lanolin.
  • Use a dropper or squeeze bottle to fill empty tubes.  If it cools and hardens, just melt again on stove or in microwave.
  • Let the tubes cool, put the lids on, are you are DONE!  You can add some cute labels if you want to.

I really love this lip balm and my kids do too.  I've even had orders and requests from neighbors.  I also love to include it in gifts to friends and teachers.

It will take a bit of money to purchase all of the supplies at first, but I calculated my cost to be around $0.35 per tube.  That is amazing savings!

Have you ever made your own lip balm?  Have you tried other flavors or other recipes?  What is your favorite?

Until next time....
